What Do Numbers Say About USA Deporting People Before Trump?

Chief Banks Tweet on USA deporting Indians is going viral

With Trump administration already making news about deporting people with a video of Indians deported being highlighted on X, we thought we should crunch some numbers for our readers.

Although It’s challenging to provide an exact year-on-year data about deportations of illegal immigrants by the U.S. government due to the fact that there are many ways deportations and removals have been recorded and reported over time.

Here’s the video posted by USBP Chief Michael W. Banks on X:

Since making exact count isn’t possible as of now, so we are providing a data of estimated deportations made by US government over certain phases and time-periods.

Time PeriodDeportations/Removals/Returns
1892-1997 (105 years)2.1 million
2001-2008 (George W. Bush)Approximately 2.0 million
2009-2016 (Barack Obama)Approximately 3.2 million
Donald Trump’s PresidencyFewer deportations than Obama, partially due to decreased illegal immigration.
Fiscal Year 2014315,943 removals
Biden Administration (FY2021-Feb 2024)1.1 million deportations
12 months after Title 42 ended775,000 removals or returns
August 2024Approximately 57,600 repatriations
20231.1 million repatriations
Q3 Fiscal Year 2024Nearly 68,000 individual noncitizens removed

Has deportation ever backfired for USA?

It has. Although not majorly.

One small example is Alex Caceda Case. Alex was a Peruvian immigrant who was unlawfully detained by the Palmer Police Department in Alaska at the request of ICE.

In response to that, ACLU of Alaska led a lawsuit resulting in Alex Caceda getting a settlement and an apology from the police department and the City of Palmer.

It also made Palmer Police Department change their Standard Operating Procedures.
