Kyiv, Ukraine – On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that a Russian drone struck the protective cover at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP). The attack damaged the structure and ignited a fire, which has since been extinguished. Zelenskyy stated that radiation levels have not increased.
The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched over 100 drones across the country overnight, including attack drones targeting the northern regions where Chernobyl is located.
Incident Details and Response
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that the strike occurred at 1:50 a.m. local time (2350 GMT). The IAEA confirmed an “explosion” at the site but stated that “radiation levels inside and outside remain normal and stable.” Fire safety personnel and vehicles responded quickly. There were no reported injuries.
Damage Assessment
The drone hit the protective shelter of Reactor 4, which was destroyed in the 1986 disaster. Initial assessments indicate significant damage to the shelter. The IAEA stated there was no indication of a breach in the inner containment shell.
International Response and Concerns
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi stated that the strike at the CNPP and increased military activity near the Zaporizhzhia plant highlight persistent nuclear safety risks. The IAEA remains on high alert and continues to monitor the situation. Zelenskyy stated that Russia is the only country that attacks such sites and wages war without regard for the consequences.
