In a bold move that threatens to escalate trade tensions, China has issued a warning to the United States following the announcement of new tariffs on Chinese goods. On February 1, 2025, the U.S. implemented a controversial 10% additional tariff on all imports from China, citing a national emergency related to synthetic opioids. As per a report by WTO, Beijing has reacted strongly, claiming these tariffs violate World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and are a blatant act of protectionism.
China’s Ministry of Commerce condemned the U.S. actions as harmful to global economic stability and has vowed to take decisive measures to protect its interests. The tariffs, which took effect on February 4, are seen as excessive and discriminatory, exceeding the U.S.’s bound tariff rates under international agreements.
In response, China is preparing to impose its own tariffs on select U.S. goods, including a 15% levy on coal and liquefied natural gas, set to take effect on February 10. This retaliatory action signals a potential trade war that could disrupt global supply chains and economic cooperation between the two nations.
