Two German groups, the Society for Civil Rights and Democracy Reporting International, are suing Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, in a Berlin court.
They claim the platform is breaking European law by not sharing key data needed to monitor election misinformation ahead of Germany’s national elections on February 23.
If the court sides with them, X could be forced to provide detailed information on how posts are shared, liked, and viewed, which would help ensure a fair and transparent election.
This lawsuit is part of a growing effort to hold social media companies accountable for their role in elections.
Similar concerns arose in the U.S. during the 2016 presidential election, when Russian groups used platforms like Facebook to spread false information and influence voters.
Cases like this one in Germany could set a global precedent, pushing other countries to demand more transparency from social media companies.
Elon Musk has always defended his platform by emphasizing free speech, but critics say X lacks strong measures to combat misinformation.
